GDANSK MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:
The famous Royal Route along Długa Street - this is the main tourist route in Gdańsk. This street starts from the Upland Gate and the pre-gate team, across Długa Street to Długi Targ. This name refers to the ceremonial entry of monarchs to the city, begun in the fifteenth century. Located there are the most important monuments of the Old Town, such as Golden Gate, Lwi Castle, Neptune Fountain, House of Ławniks or Old Town Hall.
This place, from a strategic point of view, was extremely important. The movement of ships sailing to and from Gdańsk was controlled, and due to the fact that the former port in Gdansk was located on the Motława River, a few kilometers from the sea shore, this place was of key importance to cover the city from the sea. The beginnings date back to 1482, when a cylindrical brick tower jutted in its center - while during the reign of the Pomeranian dukes there were wooden watchtowers in this place. At the beginning of the 16th century, wooden fortifications were erected around the tower, which for the following years gave way to new ones. Back in the 80s of the same century, it was replaced by a four-arbor carré fort designed by Antoni van Obberghen.
